STORY:
Vibrant Stillness | Raizan Sennyo-ji Daihiō-in Temple

During my 2025 artist residency at Studio Kura in Itoshima, we visited the Raizan Sennyo-ji Daihiō-in Temple on Mt. Raizan. The Buddhist temple complex is surrounded by meticulously curated gardens, framed by stunning wooden walkways that reveal a new, breath taking view at every turn.

One of the most striking features is a 400-year-old giant maple tree set within the garden grounds. Inspired by the many beautiful angles of the complex, I created two works from different perspectives and in two mediums: a drawing and a photograph, both titled Vibrant Stillness.

I chose this title to capture both the temple’s atmosphere of tranquillity and contemplation, while also conveying its powerful, inspiring energy. Beyond its natural beauty, it is rich in historical and cultural significance, with many impressive sights. From the nearly 5-meter-tall wooden carved 1000-armed Kannon statue to the many small stone rakan figures (Buddha’s disciples) scattered across the surrounding hills, a visit to this temple complex is one to remember.

With this drawing and photo print I hope to convey part of this temple’s beauty to you. You can find both of them on my webshop.
